Brother printer repair, independently.
Brother separates the drum from the toner — which makes running costs lower, and makes one warning message far more common.
Brother's defining difference is that the drum is a separate unit from the toner cartridge. The toner clips into a drum unit that lasts several toner changes. That lowers running costs, but it produces frequent "replace drum" warnings — and a good share of those are cleared simply by cleaning the corona wire with the green slider tab.
Two consumables, not one
On most HP and Canon lasers the drum lives inside the toner cartridge, so replacing toner replaces the drum. Brother splits them:
- Toner cartridge — coded TN, replaced often
- Drum unit — coded DR, lasts several toner changes
Cheaper over time, because you are not throwing away a drum with every cartridge. But it means two counters, two warnings, and a bit more to understand.
The green slider
Brother drum units carry a thin corona wire with a green tab that slides across it. Toner dust settles on that wire and the charge goes uneven — which shows up as print quality problems or a drum error, and looks exactly like a worn drum.
Sliding the tab gently from end to end a few times cleans it. That alone clears a genuine share of Brother drum complaints, and it costs nothing. Try it before buying a drum unit.
The reset toner sees
Brother machines count toner rather than measuring it, and many models use a mechanical or optical sensor that has to be reset when a cartridge is refilled — sometimes a physical reset gear, sometimes a panel sequence. Without it the machine keeps reporting empty on a full cartridge.
That is a normal part of refilling a Brother cartridge, and it is why a refill that was not done properly nags you afterwards. See toner low but full.
Refilling Brother cartridges
They refill well, and because the drum is separate the cartridge itself is a simpler thing to refill — no drum to protect inside it. The drum unit is checked separately and replaced on its own schedule, which is a more economical arrangement than most.

Are Brother machines cheaper to run?
Often, because you are not discarding a drum with every cartridge. It depends on the model and how much you print, but the architecture is in your favour.
