Pulling two or three sheets at once.
One part exists purely to stop this happening. When it wears, the machine takes whatever the top sheet brings with it.
Multi-feeding is usually a worn separation pad — the small friction pad that holds back everything except the top sheet. As it glazes it stops gripping and extra sheets go through together. Damp paper sticking to itself causes exactly the same symptom, so try a fresh sealed ream before assuming the part has failed.
How separation works
The pickup roller grabs the top sheet. The separation pad — a rubber or cork pad, sometimes a roller — applies just enough friction to hold back the sheet underneath. It is a balance, and it goes wrong in one direction: worn pad, multiple sheets.
Ruling out the paper first
Damp paper sticks together, and Chennai humidity makes this a genuine cause rather than a technicality.
- Try a fresh ream from a sealed pack — the single most useful test
- Fan and square the stack before loading
- Do not leave a half-used ream sitting in the tray for weeks
- Cheap or recycled stock sheds dust that glazes the pad faster
Also check the obvious: paper loaded above the maximum fill line, or side guides too loose, both cause misfeeds that look like multi-feeding.
If fresh paper does not fix it
The pad has glazed. Wiping it with a barely damp lint-free cloth sometimes restores grip briefly — worth trying if you are mid-job — but hardened rubber does not soften again. The part is inexpensive and replacing it is the actual fix.
Separation pads and pickup rollers wear together and are usually replaced as a pair. If one has gone, the other is not far behind — see paper jams.
Why it is worth fixing quickly
Multi-feeding is not just annoying. Two sheets entering a fuser designed for one is how you get creased output and, eventually, paper wrapped around a roller. It also quietly wastes a lot of paper.

Can I clean the separation pad?
Wiping the glaze off with a barely damp lint-free cloth often restores grip temporarily. It is a stopgap — the rubber has hardened and will not recover properly.
It only happens when the tray is nearly full.
The stack is probably above the maximum fill line, so the pickup roller is pressing into it too hard. Load less.
Is it worth replacing the pad and roller together?
Usually yes. They wear at similar rates, so replacing one often just means another visit shortly afterwards for the other.
