Robust laser engines and a very large inkjet range — with one error code that ends more PIXMAs than any mechanical fault.
The single most consequential Canon fault is the waste ink absorber error, usually shown as 5B00 or a similar code. The machine has counted the ink used in cleaning cycles, decided the absorbent pad is full, and stopped printing to prevent leaks. It is not a mechanical failure — the pad needs replacing and the counter resetting. Canon laser engines are otherwise notably durable.
The ranges
- imageCLASS / LBP — mono and colour lasers, from compact desktop upward. Cartridge codes are numeric, like 925, 337 or 328.
- PIXMA — the inkjet range, home through photo-capable. Cartridges use PG (pigment black) and CL (colour) prefixes.
The 5B00 problem, properly explained
Every inkjet flushes ink through its nozzles to stay clear, and that waste ink goes into an absorbent pad. Canon counts what it has used and stops when the count reaches the pad's rated capacity, because an overflowing pad leaks ink inside the machine.
Two things follow. First, it is a counter — the machine has not broken. Second, and this matters: resetting the counter without replacing the pad just moves the problem. The pad really does fill, and ink really does leak. A proper fix is pad plus reset.

PIXMA cartridges and refilling
Canon uses both architectures. Some PIXMA cartridges have the printhead built in; others feed a head that lives in the printer. That decides everything about refilling:
- Head in the cartridge — refills well until the nozzles fail, then genuinely finished
- Head in the printer — cartridges refill repeatedly and cheaply for a long time

Canon lasers
Well built and long-lived. Typical faults are the ordinary ones — pickup rollers glazing, drums reaching end of life inside the cartridge, and fuser wear on higher-volume machines. Cartridges refill well.
Independent service. We are an independent repair and refilling workshop. We are not an authorised Canon service centre and have no affiliation with Canon. Canon names and model numbers are used only to describe the machines we work on. If your printer is still under manufacturer warranty, it is usually worth using that first — and we will say so.
Common questions
What does error 5B00 mean on a Canon printer?
The waste ink absorber counter has reached its limit. The pad that collects ink from cleaning cycles is considered full and the machine stops to prevent leaks. It needs the pad replaced and the counter reset.
Can I just reset the 5B00 counter?
You can, but the pad genuinely does fill and ink genuinely does leak inside the machine. Resetting alone moves the problem rather than solving it.
Can PIXMA cartridges be refilled?
It depends which type you have. Where the printhead is built into the cartridge there is a real end of life. Where the head is in the printer, cartridges refill repeatedly.
Are Canon lasers worth repairing?
Generally yes — the engines are durable and most faults are ordinary wear parts. The usual caveat applies if several major components are finished at once.
